World Heavyweight Championship turns five years old

Eric Bischoff presents Triple H with the World Heavyweight

While there was no birthday cake in the locker room, Sept. 2 was an anniversary for one of WWE’s most sought-after honors.

On Sept. 2, 2002 in Milwaukee, Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff bestowed the new WWE World Heavyweight Championship on Triple H to give the Raw brand its own signature champion after WWE Undisputed Champion Brock Lesnar declared he would only compete on SmackDown.

Although new, the honor had an extensive history. It was directly descended from the former WCW World Championship, which came to WWE from the company’s purchase of WCW in 2001.

Before it was the WCW World Championship, the title was also the National Wrestling Alliance’s World Heavyweight Championship. The NWA lineage is traceable back to George Hackenschmidt, who first won the title in 1904. Legendary wrestlers Frank Gotch, Lou Thesz, Bronko Nagurski, and Harley Race also held the NWA championship in the prime of their careers.

When WCW ended its relationship with the NWA in the early 1990s, Ric Flair was recognized as the first-ever WCW World Champion. Since that time, top names such as Hulk Hogan, Ron Simmons, and Bret Hart carried the championship prior to WCW's demise.

During the 2001 invasion of WCW and ECW, the WCW World Title changed hands six times in a WWE ring before Chris Jericho unified it with the WWE Championship at Vengeance in December 2001.

Since its reincarnation in 2002, top WWE Superstars such as Shawn Michaels, The Great Khali, Edge, Batista, Triple H, King Booker, Undertaker and Rey Mysterio have worn the prestigious championship. It has changed hands 16 times, and Triple H leads the locker room with five championship reigns.

While only five years young, WWE’s version of the World Heavyweight gold has already had a ringside seat for some of our most memorable and competitive matches.

And as SmackDown’s signature championship, the title will likely celebrate many more birthdays on future champions’ waists, for some yet to step in a WWE ring, and some yet to be born.

The World Heavyweight Championship was brought to Raw by then-General Manager Eric Bischoff after WWE Champion Brock Lesnar became exclusive to SmackDown. WWE Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger Interviewed (Q&A with Jack Swagger)

I conducted a phone interview earlier this week with new world heavyweight champion Jack Swagger, who will defend his title at WWE’s Extreme Rules pay-per-view Sunday at 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore.
We know that you wrestled at the University of Oklahoma and earned a degree in business finance. Tell me about how you got into pro wrestling and the role that Jim Ross played.
I met Jim halfway through my college career and he told me to get my degree, and then if I wanted the opportunity, to come talk to him. My whole last semester I was doing the graduation/job interview thing, which was very mentally draining. I had a job lined up with a finance firm in Dallas, and the day I was supposed to sign up and go to work for them fulltime was the same day I got the WWE contract in the mail. I had to call [the finance firm] and tell them that I was going to wear spandex and baby oil for a living.

Were you a pro wrestling fan growing up?
Oh yeah, a huge fan. I started wrestling when I was like 5 years old, so any form of it, I ate it up. Of course in the ’90s it was so exciting with the competition [between WWE and WCW] and everything. Like I said, I’ve been wrestling since I was 5, so any form of wrestling that I see, I automatically love. I think it’s the greatest sport on the planet.
How much did your amateur wrestling background help prepare you for WWE?
I felt like when I came in, even though I was about as raw as you could be to professional wrestling, because of the background, I still was light years ahead of most people. As far as the work in the ring, it’s so much technique and spacing and timing, and that’s what amateur wrestling is, too. So I felt like I learned very fast and a lot of things came naturally for me.
What was the toughest aspect of learning to be a pro wrestler?
Like I said, the physical part came very naturally to me. The toughest part was the character development and in-ring psychology. Everybody in this business learns something new every day, especially when it comes to those two. … I still remember when I first signed, it was very overwhelming to get on a microphone and just talk and have it come across as real and believable. I’m not going to lie: It was a big mountain for me, I would say.
So how much of Jake Hager [Swagger’s real name] is in Jack Swagger?
I’d say a lot. It’s who I am, it’s just amplified. I feel the most comfortable out there when I’m just being Jake Hager. Maybe that makes me a jerk to a certain extent, but you just have to go on your own personality, your own value of what’s entertaining and what feels good for you. It’s your instincts, and when you rely on that, nine times out of 10 it’s the right thing to do.
Your push in WWE has been accelerated over the past three weeks since winning the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania XXVI. Prior to that, it seemed as if you were stuck in neutral. Were you surprised when you were told that you were going to get this opportunity?
It definitely was a whirlwind turn of events and I’ve been riding high ever since. In certain aspects it was surprising, but I felt like I had the tools and the skills to carry that championship and be a face for this company. To me personally, it wasn’t that much of a surprise. It was just a matter of time, I felt. If you go back and look at WWE Magazine, they asked me when I was going to win my first world championship and I told them WrestleMania XXVI, so I was only a couple days off.
Since winning the title your character has undergone a change. The guy with the disingenuous grin doing the push-ups and beating his chest is gone. You’re much more of a serious character now. What are your thoughts about it?
I think the character is still the same. I’m still Jack Swagger, the All-American American, and all that cockiness and chest-beating is still there, it’s still inside, and I believe that translates in my matches. The change in what you see I think just reflects how important that world title is. It’s a game-changer and you have to treat it like so if you want to be successful. That’s just my respect for this business and respect for that championship, and the fact that I’m going to do everything I can to hang onto it as long as I can.
A lot of guys in the business wrestle well into their 40s and way beyond. How long do you see yourself doing this?
Good Lord willing I’d like to do it until I’m financially comfortable and I can venture off and find something else that I’m just as passionate about. But I love this industry, I love working for this company. It would take a lot for me to just hang it up, but it’s not going to last forever and you have to prepare yourself for it. Anything can change at any minute. It’s kind of one of the exciting things about it, but at the same time one of the downsides about it. I see Jack Swagger wrestling for at least another 10 years.
How do you feel about your lisp being brought up in a mocking way on the show? Have you ever been self conscious about it?
Oh sure, as a kid I was self conscious about it, but a lot of people tell me they don’t even notice it. I’m sure it comes out here and there. First of all, it’s a real disease. It’s my cross to bear or what not. I’m joking around here, but at times I’m like, “Come on, this is a little childish.” But at the same time, it’s true so why not use it?
With WWE having its own film division, a lot of the guys are breaking into acting and doing movies. Is that something that you’re interested in?
Definitely. I’ve always been a big fan of Hollywood. If the opportunity presents itself, I would jump at it. I think I still have a ways to go before I’m ready for that transition, but it’s definitely a possibility. I look like a winner, I smell like a winner, so why not put it on the big screen?

The Right and Wrong Directions for Jack Swagger's Push

*Warning: This article contains spoilers for Friday night's episode of Smackdown**
When Jack Swagger overcame nine other Superstars to win this year's Money in the Bank match at Wrestlemania, I wasn't the only one that was surprised to see him grab the briefcase.
After all, winning the Money in the Bank match has virtually guaranteed a world title reign. Mr. Kennedy, the match's only winner NOT to win a world title, had to give up the briefcase because of an injury.
By all accounts, he was well on his way to a world title reign and major push before the injury and eventual departure from the company.
Then came Tuesday night's Smackdown tapings. The show opened with Chris Jericho and Edge arguing before Edge speared the world champion.
Enter Swagger, who took out Edge before taking advantage of a wounded Jericho to become the new World Heavyweight Champion.
Edge's mega-push started with his MITB victory. Rob Van Dam finally reached main-event level on the big stage after his victory.
And CM Punk started his road to the top with two MITB victories. Will Swagger be the next MITB success story?
Swagger's push can go one of two ways ...
The wrong way: From what I've read about plans for a long-term Edge/Jericho feud, and the way things began building on Smackdown, I fear this is the road we're headed down.
The worst thing WWE could do is throw Swagger into a match against either Edge or Jericho at Extreme Rules and have Swagger lose.
CM Punk's title reigns were never terribly long after he cashed in the MITB contract, but they were also never that short.
If Swagger drops the belt at Extreme Rules and were to lose his return match, the momentum his character took out of Wrestlemania would be nullified. Edge, Rob Van Dam and CM Punk all rode their MITB momentum to the top.
WWE needs to stick with Swagger's push this time around. If not, Swagger is in line to become the next Kane—a footnote on the long list of former WWE/World Heavyweight champions and a future jobber to the stars.
The right way: In short, Swagger gets a decent run with the title.
It can really happen any number of ways. If I were in charge of the angle, either Edge or Chris Jericho (whoever doesn't face Swagger) would get involved in the main event at Extreme Rules, costing the challenger the title. This would further fuel the Edge/Jericho rivalry while keeping the belt on Swagger.
Under the assumption John Cena doesn't switch to Smackdown in the annual draft, Swagger appears to be headed for a permanent stay on Friday nights.
WWE could parade any of the faces we're used to seeing out to challenge Swagger after Extreme Rules. The solution, however, may not be on Smackdown...yet.
Two men, in particular, stick out for Swagger's post-Extreme Rules feud.
Rey Mysterio would be the guy for WWE to push if they were looking to validate Swagger as a champion. A win over Mysterio at Over the Limit, in May, would further extend Swagger's reign.
Mysterio could then go over at Fatal Four Way, in June, giving the Ultimate Underdog one more world title reign before his career tails off.
If all goes well and the push carries, Swagger could regain the title at Summerslam, for example, giving him a win over an established star at a marquee event.
Multiple Internet reports point toward a lengthy feud between Mysterio and CM Punk. I highly doubt WWE is going to bail on those plans if they entered Wrestlemania with eyes on a long-term feud.
Two young stars in the making seem perfect for the opportunity to enter a main event feud: Kofi Kingston and John Morrison.
Morrison could be the perfect answer. His program as R-Truth's tag team partner may have reached a dead end, and Morrison is more than deserving of a big push. A Swagger/Morrison feud could last for the majority of the year, finally culminating in the fall or winter months.
Since Kingston is currently a Raw superstar, he would likely have to switch brands before a feud with Swagger could happen.
Kingston's gimmick could help him identify with the demographic Smackdown normally targets.
He could also hone his skills as a top-level face for the next year or two before returning to Raw once Triple H's in-ring career winds to an end.
Finally, it would complete a push WWE has been teasing since the Kingston/Randy Orton feud.
As a Swagger mark, I really hope WWE doesn't throw in the towel on this push. Smackdown is in need of a young main event-level heel, and Swagger can be just that.

Why Is He Famous?

He's part wrestler, part rapper. And he's successful in both endeavors, cutting rap tracks and winning several titles in the ring, including the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Championship.

Biography

His journey to the big time was along a road that many superstar pro wrestlers take. First he played college football. Then he wrestled on minor circuits. The wrestler we now know as John Cena was known as "Prototype" in Ultimate Pro Wrestling and Ohio Valley Wrestling.

In 2002, John made his WWE debut. At that time, there was really nothing exciting or special about him. So, WWE turned him into a rapper. It wasn't a hit with fans initially, but they came around because of his clever raps about other wrestlers.

In 2004, John showed he could do more than rap. During WrestleMania XX, he defeated The Big Show to win the WWE United States Championship. That victory kicked off the first of John's reigns as U.S. Champion. At 2005's WrestleMania, he beat JBL to win the WWE title. John even had his very own championship belt featuring a spinning WWE logo plate.

John Cena has been productive in the recording studio. His tracks can be found on WWE soundtrack albums. On top of that, John cut the album You Can't See Me, featuring his entrance theme, "The Time is Now." In addition to the squared circle, you can also see John on the big screen: his first major movie role is in The Marine, produced by WWE Films.

PG Rules for Extreme PPV

On Sunday night WWE produced a well thought-out, logical PPV with a fair amount of entertaining wrestling and good storytelling.

The thing is, it wasn't Extreme.

WWE are clearly in a PG era, and this is understood, but the billing of this as a night where the rules are thrown out of the window is, frankly, a little false.

Failure to live up to promises to go hardcore aside, this was a tidy PPV offering which saw nothing groundbreaking but a clutch of decent, well-told matches that wiled away three hours.

Mind you, had you missed the opening five minutes you could be forgiven for thinking you had stumbled on the latest episode of Raw.

Triple H was attacked backstage by Sheamus to cast doubt on their match taking place, before an unscheduled ShoMiz took to the ring.

As Miz crowed about how great the duo were, Smackdown GM Teddy Long decided to book them in a match.

As Miz continued to speak, so the number of opponents increased. This ended up being a gauntlet match with any team scoring a win over ShoMiz being awarded a title shot.

After seeing off R-Truth and John Morrison, then despatching MVP and Mark Henry, the reigning champ was downed by The Hart Dynasty, accompanied by Bret Hart.

David Hart Smith and Tyson Kidd will now try for the belts tonight on Raw.

The scheduled card began with CM Punk and Rey Mysterio putting together a fine contest which eclipsed their battle at WrestleMania.

For many this will be the match of the night. Mixing Rey's brand of high spots with some gorgeous counter wrestling by Punk, it was only ruined by a lack of clean finish.

With Rey on top, a hooded figure emerged from under the ring to assist Punk, who won the match to prevent his head being shaved as per the match stipulation.

Speculation is already rife that the assist was made by the returning Joey Mercury, formerly of MNM, who may be the newest Straight Edge Society recruit.

The Cryme Tyme explosion took place next with JTG beating Shad in a limp strap match. The two men were hampered by a mediocre build, crowd apathy and a stipulation match which always seems to necessitate a formulaic finish.

The first world title defence was featured early in the night as Jack Swagger attempted to retain his sneakily obtained belt by beating the rampant Randy Orton. Amazingly, he did so.

Swagger, who was booked to lose to Morrison on Smackdown, shocked us by not only winning, but winning cleanly against The Viper.

Orton had set up a chair on which to deliver an RKO but Swagger turned the tables, dropping Randy back-first onto the steel then hitting a Gutwrench Powerbomb for the win.

Again the match itself failed to live up to its 'Extreme' billing. A notable moment saw Orton hit Swagger in the head with a dustbin lid but the flimsy items are not like steel chairs, so little should be read into this.

As Orton headed back up the ramp after giving Swagger a moody post-match RKO he passed Sheamus, appearing in order to boast at putting Triple H on the shelf.

The Game, though, emerged to play up a superhero you-cannot-keep-me-down routine and the two brawled for a while.

The match was fine, but again simply did not feel like a truly Extreme contest with both men going all out. Sheamus' win was solid booking with good storyline development, there was just something missing once again.

As Michelle McCool's music played, our chatroom understandably called this the moment to take a toilet break or put the kettle on.

But anyone who did actually missed a reasonable Divas match, with Beth Phoenix snatching the belt from McCool in an improved outing for the females of the company.

What an Extreme Makeover match is we are still to find out, although weapons used included an iron, ironing boards and a broom. Nothing sexist there then.

But if the Divas exceeded our hopes, we are afraid Chris Jericho and Edge failed to live up to what is expected of these two quality performers.

Perhaps it was paced too slowly. Perhaps the lack of babyface heat for Edge affected things too much.

A week ago we might have said that getting a great match from a cage stipulation was hard in this day and age, but Kurt Angle and Ken Anderson blew that theory out of the water last week at Lockdown.

There was nothing inherently wrong with this match, it was simply a little slower and less exciting than expected. And Edge's win after a second spear of the match felt extremely anti-climactic.

It was left to John Cena and Batista to close the show without the safety net of being followed by Shawn Michaels and Undertaker — and they did an admirable job with another quality match.

The match had moments of excitement such as Batista taking an attitude adjustment through the announce desk and humour — Big Dave telling a young, female Cena fan "I hate you too" was hilarious — before Cena took charge as expected.

The finish will surely polarise the audience.

In a match where the object was to prevent your opponent from reaching their feet for a 10 count, Cena tied Batista to the ring post by his legs and retained the title.

Some will say lame and cheap, others will think original and creative. Judge for yourself, although we quite liked it.

All in all, Extreme Rules had some good matches and good storytelling that made this a good night.

Just not extremely good, that's all.

Raw given Edge by WWE draft

RAW once again got the best of the annual WWE draft, as both Edge and Chris Jericho moved over from Smackdown.

The two Canadians are considered among the best in the business today and fought against each other in a well-received world title match at WrestleMania.

They will be joined by rising star John Morrison and the popular R-Truth.

In return stunning Diva Kelly Kelly, former intercontinental champion Kofi Kingston and veterans Christian and Big Show were drafted to Smackdown.

All those major moves came in action packed episode of Raw which also saw a huge victory for the British Bulldog Dave Boy Smith's son.

DH Smith and his partner Tyson Kid, who wrestle as The Hart Dynasty, won the WWE's unified tag team titles from ShowMiz.

The pair, along with valet Natalya, were also then put on Raw as part of the WWE's supplemental picks — where they'll join legendary family member Bret 'Hitman' Hart.

Also added to the Monday night show as part of the supplemental draft were The Great Khali, Ranjin Singh, Ezekiel Jackson and Goldust.

Chavo Guerrero, Cody Rhodes, Chris Master, Hornswoggle, Rosa Mendes and MVP went in the opposite direction to Smackdown.

Ex-ECW stars Tyler Reks and Vance Archer have both also been moved to Smackdown, but their former co-workers Abraham Washington, Tony Atlas and Byron Saxton have been removed from TV and the WWE's website.

Edge immediately made an impact on Raw by turning heel and helping Batista defeat Randy Orton and Sheamus to become the No1 contender for John Cena's world championship.

The match, expected to take place at WWE's Over The Limit PPV on May 23, could be Batista's last as he's likely to leave wrestling and pursue a movie career.

It is thought WWE have strengthened the Raw roster to compete with both the NFL and rival wrestling firm TNA on Monday nights.

Jim Ross said of the draft: "It featured a mix bag of results. Raw loaded up as they prepare for Monday Night Football this autumn.

"It is imperative for any Monday night wrestling program to plan long term and to be able to roll into the fall with some degree of momentum and interest from a storyline perspective.

"Raw has and always will be WWE's top TV priority, as it should be, considering that Raw is generally the No1 program on cable TV."

WWE Making Gorgeous George Movie

SEXY ex-WWE Diva Maria Kanellis has revealed her pain at splitting from Smackdown star CM Punk.
Maria said the break-up was so bad, her pain inspired new album Seven Sins.

WWE Hall Of Fame Class Of 2010 List Of Nominees will be updated here. The WWE has been undoubtedly the most entertaining sport in the world. It rains in huge bucks and is extremely popular among most ages throughout the entire globe. There has been a massive change from the wrestling days of the yesteryear but there have been some Legends of the past and it was WWE’s decision in 2008 to nominate the legendary figures in the World of Wrestling. So the Hall of Fame has been a huge success since then and the buzz surrounding the 2010 WWE Hall of Fame is no less.

2010 WWE Hall of Fame Nominees Confirmed

1. Ted DiBiase
It was just announced on Monday Night RAW (Feb 8 2010) that “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase will be the first inductee into the 2010 WWE Hall of Fame the night before WrestleMania 26.

2. Antonio Inoki

Antonio Inoki, a Japanese professional wrestler and an mma fighter, is the latest superstar to be inducted in the WWE Hall of Class of 2010. WWE confirmed Antonio Inoki as the 2nd member of the 2010 Hall of Fame class last night on RAW.
3. Wendi Richter

Wendi Richter is a former professional wrestler who has been a Two-time WWF Women’s Champion, one-time AWA Women’s Champion and two-time NWA Women’s World Tag Team Champion.
4. Vachon, Maurice

Maurice Vachonis a retired professional wrestler, best known by his ring name “Mad Dog” Vachon. He has been a Five-time AWA World Heavyweight Champion.
5. Bob Uecker

Uecker would be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2010 as a celebrity inductee. In 1987, Uecker appeared as a ringside announcer at WrestleMania III in Pontiac, Michigan, followed by a return in 1988 at WrestleMania IV as both a ringside announcer and backstage interviewer.
In the fall of 2006, WWE contacted Uecker to appear at WrestleMania 23 on April 1, 2007 in Detroit, Michigan.
6. Stu Hart
As announced by the special guest host (Stone Cold Steve Austin) for this week’s RAW, Stu Hart, father of Bret Hitman Hart will be added to the 2010 class of the WWE Hall Of Fame.

The buzz of expectation and predictions surrounding the WWE Hall of Fame 2010

There have been views, expectations and rumors surrounding the 2010 Hall of Fame. This event is scheduled now at the Dodge Theater which seems to be a perfect venue for this event. Rumors had been ripe about The Rock being inducted this year. But again the nomination or the induction policy of the Hall of Fame has created a lot of controversy in the past.
There are many possibilities but the most likely inductees would be Randy Savage, Road Warriors, Ricky Steamboat, Terry Funky, Mick Foley and Ted Dibiase. The suggestion of Rock’s name goes well with the fact that Austin had been inducted in the 2009 Hall of Fame and it might be rock owing to his contribution and fame. However, he is still younger and the other rumors Brian Pillman, Demoltion, Howard Finkel and Shawn Michaels. The other strong suggestions about inductees in 2010 might be ex manager Slick, The Honky Tonk Man and The Ultimate Warrior.

The NXT Interview: Skip Sheffield

NXT Rookie Skip Sheffield won’t back down from a challenge and one thing is for sure – he’s definitely “showing up.” After placing second in two Rookies Challenges on WWE NXT, The Cornfed Meathead finally got the attention of the WWE Universe and the WWE Pros when he won the Rock ’em Sock ’em Rookies Challenge. And with the next WWE Pros’ Poll just two weeks away, Sheffield is determined to make an impact and move up from his No. 6 spot in the Rookie Rankings.

WWE.com: Congratulations on your win in the Rock ’em Sock ’em Rookies Challenge on WWE NXT. After two second place finishes, what made you succeed in this Challenge?
SHEFFIELD: Every week I take the competitions extremely seriously. I don’t think all of the other NXT Rookies necessarily do. I think they are very important as far as getting extra exposure. You never know what you’re going to get out of them. Even though they don’t always deal with in-ring skills, I think it’s important to show the WWE Universe and the WWE Pros that you take this stuff seriously. And no matter what it is, I’m out there to win.

I thought that was a great challenge as far as showing off our athletic abilities, balance and speed. Being the biggest NXT Rookie, I thought it was a great chance to show the others that I could handle them and be better than them. It came down to me and Darren Young. I was not going to come in second place in another competition, because I finished second the previous two, and I was determined to win and I did.

WWE.com: By winning the challenge Tuesday, you earned the chance to take over WWE.com for 24 hours. Your photo was seen on nearly 10 million WWE.com pages in one day! How does that make you feel?
SHEFFIELD: It feels incredible. I’ve never known anyone to take over WWE.com for any period of time like that and it’s a huge honor to get that exposure and to be seen by 10 million people worldwide! I mean, that’s huge.

From my standpoint, I knew the WWE Universe wasn’t going to necessarily get to know me immediately by being teamed with William Regal. I knew this was going to be a slow process for them to understand who I am and what I’m about. In the first seven to eight weeks, my exposure, compared to the other NXT Rookies, was limited, especially in the ring.

Now, this is a marathon – not a sprint – and it’s not necessarily how you start, it’s how you finish. And I think right now I’m starting to make my move to get exposure. I’m starting to peak at the right time. And it was a tremendous honor to take over WWE.com for 24 hours and to be seen by that many people.

WWE.com: What’s the significance behind the Keanu Reeves “just showing up” quote you said on TV and on WWE.com?
SHEFFIELD: I was younger when Hardball came out. People may think it’s silly and whatnot, but I believe that no matter what you do in life, you have three options everyday. You can give up. You can give in. Or you can give it your all. And I choose to give it my all no matter what I do. You never want to give up or give in. If you show up everyday, which Keanu Reeves does in that movie, you put yourself in position to succeed, and that’s what I live by. So that’s why I quoted that. It just came out. I didn’t plan on saying that. It just came out and that’s how I really truly feel.

WWE.com: The WWE Pros ranked you No. 6 in the Pros’ Poll. What are you doing to move up in the Rookie Rankings?
SHEFFIELD: First of all, if I were the WWE Pros, I wouldn’t rank myself No. 1, either, because as far as I’m concerned, I’m the biggest, most athletic guy in the competition. So to them, I’m actually a huge threat. I’m a threat to their positions, a threat to everything they stand for, so I’m not surprised that they put me at No. 6.

Every opportunity that I can, I know I need to get out there and make the most of it. Some of the other NXT Rookies have had the chance to get in the ring with the WWE Pros, whereas I have not. I think that it’s going to matter when I do get in the ring, and all I can hope for is getting the opportunity to do so. … Each and every day, I try and impress these guys and just give them my all. But I am a threat to them. I know that. I can sense that. And at this point, Daniel Bryan started at No. 1. And it’s a tough job to hold.

WWE.com: We know the Pros’ Poll isn’t solely based on win-loss records, but you’re 0-5, and Daniel Bryan, who is ranked No. 1, is 0-8. Why do you think he is on top even though he’s also winless?
SHEFFIELD: I feel he’s No. 1 because of the following that he’s gathered from his many years on the independent scene. He has a friendship with a lot of the WWE Pros. He’s wrestled them in the past and they know what he can do. They have respect for him, right off the bat. It doesn’t necessarily mean he should have been No. 1 to start off, but he had that exposure with them from the start.

At this point, I’m concentrating on myself and just moving up each and every week. Week 12, someone is going to get slashed off this list and I’m just going to continuously move up until the end when it’s going to be me and whoever. I believe I’m making it down to the final two. It doesn’t matter who I’m with, but I really truly believe in my heart I’m going to be here at the end.

WWE.com: How has your relationship with your WWE Pro, William Regal, been lately?
SEHFFIELD: I haven’t seen him in a while. He was stuck in Europe, which I’m not necessarily upset about. He wasn’t there last week and I fended pretty well for myself.

It’s been pretty shaky. I think the most difficult part of this is having to come out to his music, believe it or not. I’m a high-energy guy. I want the WWE Universe to feel my energy and that music hits and everyone instantly boos. And I think that that’s definitely been detrimental to me. I don’t think the WWE Universe knew how to take me, and I think they wanted to hate me, but now they see I’m nothing like William Regal.

I want to listen to everything he has to teach me, but he has a different mentality. He has a different mindset on things. He goes about things differently then I would like to. But at the same time, he is my WWE Pro, and I’m not going to win this competition without him being behind me one way or another. I’m also trying to win over his respect and show him that I have what it takes to be a main event World Champion.

WWE.com: Who is your biggest competition on WWE NXT?
SHEFFIELD: Right now, I would say Wade Barrett is on quite the roll. I think he’s definitely going to be a tough contender at the end, along with Heath Slater and Daniel Bryan. I think you’re seeing in this season of WWE NXT that there are eight top-notch guys. The talent is overflowing on the show. All of the guys have something to bring to the table. With a win over Chris Jericho last week, Heath Slater really upped his part as far as where he stands. It doesn’t matter to me who I am next to at the end. I just worry about myself each and every day and worry about what I have to do to make this thing work and whether it’s Daniel Bryan, David Otunga, Darren Young or Wade Barrett next to me, it really doesn’t matter.

WWE.com: Who would you like to face next to hopefully earn your first victory?
SHEFFIELD: I would like to go up against Darren Young, believe it or not. He’s highly competitive, much like myself. I’m extremely competitive and I like to be the best at whatever I do, and Darren Young has that same mentality. I think we could have a really hard-hitting, good match out there to see who the better NXT Rookie is. I’d definitely like to see him in the ring.

So far, I’ve only had one singles match, which is probably the least out of everyone at this point, and I definitely would like to have some more matches and be able to show everyone what I can do. The WWE Universe hasn’t really been able to see what I can do. Hopefully in the upcoming weeks, I’ll have that opportunity to go out there and show everyone.

WWE.com: How did you get a nickname like “The Cornfed Meathead”?
SHEFFIELD: A lot of people look at the term “meathead” as a negative term. I’m in the gym each and every day. I’m very competitive. I’ve been lifting weights since I was 12 years old. I’m just a corn-fed meathead guy. It’s very fitting.

I think a lot of people don’t know I’m extremely intelligent and they wouldn’t know that by what the announcers say. I’m a little silly at times, but I also have a serious side and I look forward to showing them that in upcoming weeks.

WWE.com: Do you have any final messages for the WWE Universe?
SHEFFIELD: Keep a lookout for the over the shoulder boulder holder. It’s going to be the best finish in WWE history, and once people see that, they’re going to enjoy it. I look forward to entertaining the WWE Universe and putting smiles on people’s faces and winning WWE NXT.
